A Naturopath's Advice to Seniors

The state of our health is ultimately our responsibility so the choices we make in matters affecting our health are crucial. One matter of importance is to ask questions of your doctors to make sure they are being thorough in their decision-making. And most importantly, you should be the final decision maker about any medical or health related treatments.

Many of our allopathic health care professionals are over-booked, pay exorbitant liability insurance, and are bombarded with new drugs to push on their patients. Extending one's life span and comfort from pain with a drug is fine, as long as the quality of that life is not being overly compromised. It is important to be aware of and watch for the side effects of pharmaceutical drugs. Too often another drug will be prescribed because of such side effects. Many drugs are supposed to be recommended for a short period during which time the cause of the health issue is addressed and corrected through nutrition, exercise and/or emotional healing programs.

As we get older we can become more vulnerable to degeneration. It is very important for the senior to eat high nutrient packed foods like nuts and seeds, fresh fruits and vegetables, sprouted grains, legumes, protein powder drinks, and lean meats like fish, chicken, turkey and beef if tolerated. A diet of coffee, sweets, white flour products, processed and preserved foods will deplete vitamins, minerals and protein stores, causing accelerated aging, degeneration and illness. Much of the dementia and mental illness experienced by seniors can be prevented with B complex vitamins and essential fatty acids for nerve and brain transmission. Health is a product of proper eating habits, nutrition, supplementation, exercise and attitude along with healthy digestion, assimilation and elimination.

Health care is not what it used to be when a doctor would visit you at home and take more that 10 minutes going over your results and visiting with you. My average blood chemistry consultation takes 2 hours. It is important to know each client's "whole health picture" to gather the information needed to guide them towards health and wellness.
